Background

Studies of international organizations such as FAO, OECD and the World Bank have shown that a so called "Revolution of livestock production" is now happening in the world. This phenomenon is characterized by the migration of animal production from developed to developing countries. Brazil has an important role in this whole process, being placed as the world largest animal protein producer in the coming years, due to its availability of labor, land suitable for agriculture and abundant natural resources, notably water. Nowadays, cattle, swine and poultry are the animal industry of major importance in the country . Nevertheless, in brazilian regions where these productions are concentrated there are already environmental conflicts by the use of natural resources and the pollution caused by animal residues. The development of livestock industry brings social and economical benefits for the country although these must be conciliated with the conservation of quantity and quality of natural resources. The scientific community, through the generation of knowledge and dissemination of this to the society, has key role for the development of animal agriculture in harmony with the principles of sustainability, however it is important to improve the interaction between members of these scientific groups to discuss the mainly problems associated to that industry in order to create research network to reach common goals. It is important to mention that there are few scientific events in the word that focuses on animal waste management and this one would be the first promoted in Brazil.
